Top 10 things to do in the Maldives!

You know something amazing is going to happen when you are about to land in the Maldives. The hues of green scattered Islands & Atolls on the canvas of the blue ocean appears like an artist’s imagination. The trip to the Maldives was a birthday gift from my husband (one of the best gifts ever!). While boarding the flight my excitement was at its peak. Not only was it my birthday (I know it’s kiddish) but also I was traveling to my dream destination. The Maldives truly live up to the image created by those dreamy desktop wallpapers that I used to get lost in as a kid.I fell in love with this place within a few seconds after landing (or even before that!).

I have listed 10 things that I believe you should experience on your visit to the Maldives.

Diving: Maldives is 99 % water and to experience its vivid coral reef and the diversity of marine life you need to get your swim gear on. Diving is a great way to explore the rich marine life.  Say hello to a Manta Ray or slowly chase a swimming sea tortoise.

Snorkeling: My first experience of snorkeling in the Maldives is something that I will always cherish. If you haven’t tried snorkeling before, Maldives is the best place to give it a shot. I will recommend that you check the snorkeling gear provided by the operator by trying it once before leaving since it’s important that it should fit you like nice dental braces :).  We carried our own gear so it was quite convenient for us. They were not too bulky and we could easily fit them in a cabin size bag.

Visiting white sandbanks: This pristine place will set your senses to a surreal dreamy mode when everything will look unreal. We both quickly exchanged a ” WOW ” glance while getting off the speedboat and our excitement knew no bounds. Crystal clear water on both sides and a powdery white sandbank in between. Ensure that you carry a hat /scarf  & sunscreen lotion to this place as the sun can get really fierce.

Dolphin spotting: What joy to look at those adorable creatures dancing near the edge of your boat. Dolphins are known to be quite social and friendly. Maybe your next friend is waiting for you in the Maldives.Who knows :). This activity is usually clubbed with snorkeling and a sand bank tour.

Try out a Maldivian Massage: Massages are a great way to relax especially after a day full of activity. You will find expert masseurs in almost all resorts.

Kayaking: The clear and calm turquoise waters of the Maldives and a lack of strong undercurrent near the coast makes kayaking relatively safer and absolute fun.Don’t forget your life jackets, though.

Old Friday Mosque: This mosque, made of coral stone, is the capital Male’s oldest construction. The walls are beautifully inscribed with Quranic script. The mosque was originally constructed in 1658 AD.Visitors wishing to step inside are required to get permission from an official of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.Totally worth it!

maldives culture

Experience local culture: Visiting a new country without experiencing the local culture is like half love. Do visit islands like Fuvahmulah, Maafushi, Fulidhoo, and  Hulhumale to get the feel of local life in Maldives. There aren’t too many resorts in these islands. Walk as much as you can to absorb Maldivian culture.

Submarine Tours: For those who don’t wish to dive into the water, they can get a glimpse of marine life of the Maldives in a 45-minutes submarine tour. But it’s rather expensive and recommended only for a special and unique experience.

Besides island hopping, Male’s fish market, National Museum can also be experienced if you have more time in hand.

Hope you enjoyed the post !

  2. Yes please! A friend of mine recently went snorkeling on a trip and she was surprised that she excelled at it even though she’s not a great swimmer in her mind. Your post made me think of her 🙂
